FYI -- Mna Dibeartha (Banished Women) a 4 part series boxed set from TG4 is a very well produced documentary restoring the historical importance of the 25,566 women who were transported to Australia from 1787 to 1853 - nearly half of them Irish. These convict women and young orphan girls became the founding mothers of the Australian nation, their achievements mostly overlooked. Many women left behind husbands and children that they never saw again.
Mostly narrated in Gaeilge, with some English interviews, some subtitles, it is also a useful test of language - and increases understanding of the history and links between Ireland and Australia. Directed by Barrie Dowdall 2013 priced $A35 online.
