Would young people just use "WOW" or in real life would there be the other term?

What he said was "Ná habair!" Basically "don't tell me! Seriously?"

I don't know what young people might say, but "ná habair" is pretty common.

Just to add...one of the fun things about language learning is discovering what they REALLY say on TV.

I think a lot would probably just say, Feck! (or Feckit or a similar variation).

Thanks all - that does help a lot. Convinces me even more that I need to see the words in print, not just hear a sound that I'm not familiar with. Will keep transcribing the course work.

That's also an advantage to being a TG4 addict.

It's fun, when watching Ros na Rún, to compare the subtitles to the actual words spoken. For example, when the subtitles say "Oh my God!" the actual words spoken are usually something like "A mhaighdean!" or "as ucht Dé" or "Dia sábhail!" You'll see "Ná habair!" rendered as just about everything from "don't tell me!" (which is closest literally) to "wow" or "cool."

Or rather controversially, sometimes when someone refers to the 'sé contae', the subtitles might say 'Northern Ireland'. Different political nuance.

Ive heard "a leithéid" used here, for Wow and something along the lines of , the like of it.

Not sure if , the likes of it, is an acceptable phrase in non Hiberno English ??

It kind of depends on the context. Are you meaning as in a standalone phrase? That probably wouldn't be understood by most American English speakers. You will hear "I've never seen the like" or "have you seen the like?", though, especially in parts of the South.

"Goddam, well I declare!/Have you seen the like?
Their walls are built of cannonballs/their motto is 'don't tread on me'"
