Apparently it is made of fun + locht (locht =-place), so the n would have assimilated to the l then lenited to a single l, but what I'd like to know is what did 'fun' mean in OI or MI?

Going out on a limb, 'fun' could be 'base' (fundament, fundamental) as the fulacht fia would have a stone base and sides to it was well

Latin has puteus "well, pit, shaft.", fuil is blood and there is fuineadh, 'cooking, roasting, preparing' etc


won't be of much interest to most, but maybe someone has some ideas!
