thank you all for helping with a poem that i posted last month. the person i did the request for loved it.
right now i have a quote i saw on a war vet.

Freedom by the blood of the fallen
or
Freedom by the blood of our fathers

the second is the one i saw. so i personalized it by changing it to the first.

thank you for your time

Freedom by the blood of our fathers

Saoirse trí doirteadh fola ár sinsearach

wait for more input or correction

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Trí lenites pretty much everywhere, doesn’t it?

Any difference in nuance between ár sinsear vs. ár sinsearach?

(Could also be saoirse trí dhoirteadh fhuil ár sinsear(ach), of course, if it were ‘freedom through the spilling of our fathers’ blood’, rather than ‘freedom through our fathers’ spilling of blood’ … hard to translate the difference into English.)

You are right. And "sinsear" is better too.

I hadn't thought of that.

After mulling it over (always a dangerous thing to do, ’cause you risk imposing the ideas and meanings you want to be there on to things where they weren’t there originally), this appears to sum it up for me:

Doirteadh fola ár sinsear(ach) = the bloodshed of our fathers, i.e., either our fathers’ blood being shed or (more likely) our fathers spilling someone else’s blood.

Doirteadh fhuil ár sinsear(ach) = the spilling of our fathers’ blood; no other possibility.

Does this seem right to native speakers, too? Or am I over-analysing and over-rationalising the constructions?
