I have been playing around with writing some sentences using the verb 'iarr' which again to my mind is more of a concept word rather than something that is directly translated to English. In its 'wanting' or 'desiring' aspect though I find it a little confusing as to when to use it in favour of other Irish. Some may be the wrong way to say some things but as usual this is how I find out where I am going wrong! Some of it may not be good phrasing but hopefully technically correct? I will write a few sentences below for you to drag me through the coals over
Bhí sé i gconnaí ag cleachtadh agus ag iarraidh feabhas a chur a chuid scileanna.
He was always practicing and trying to improve his skills.
Thug mé iarracht geailge a fhoghlaim ach bhí sé ró dheachair
I made and attempt to learn Irish but it was too difficult.
Diarr mo dhinnéar inné mar bhí mé ag tnaite. Mar sin, rith mé abhaile go tapa agus dith mé ar nós na gaoithe é.
I wanted my dinner yesterday because I was starving. So I ran home fast and ate it it like the wind.
Bá mhaith liom an ceolchoirm a dul de aoinne seo chugainn.
I want to go to the concert on next friday.
Now this is the bit that puzzles me. The final sentence has the same kind of theme as the others. I suspect this is very bad Irish and should really be
'Táim ag iarraidh an ceolchoirm a dul de haoine seo chugainn' but I know if I said bá mhaith liom deoich bainne coipthe (I want a milk shake) that would be correct. I am starting to wonder when I should be using 'Bá mhaith liom' and when to be using 'iarr' can someone clarify the difference between these concepts?
