This came up at our ciorcal comhrá last night, and none of us knew the answer. What's Irish for "backing singer" and "backing vocals"?

www.focal.ie gives amhránaí taca for backing singer. Would that be a common way to say it, and are there any other terms that people use?

It's a relatively modern term, even in English (and certainly in Irish, where traditional singing is done solo), so I doubt there's much of an established term for it. "Amhránaí taca" sounds a bit contrived, but given the relative newness of the term, is probably fine. Another option might be "cór" ("chorus").

Bríd, what would you use to describe a singer or group of singers providing backing vocals for a soloist?

Like you said back up singers are not required in traditional sean-nós singing. I can't think of a better word for it than "Amhránaí taca/tacaíochta". Which sounds ok to me as they are "helping" singers.
Maybe it would be a good idea to ask an Irish musician.
