The book im using, has Tarrac as to draw , couldnt find it online, but O'Dónaill has it as 1=Tarraingt, which is the verbal noun of Tarraing and a different gender from Tarrac.

Is Tarrac not used, should I learn Tarraingt instead?

Yup, they're the same.

Ó Dónaill gives tarrac as masculine, but in Cork Irish its feminine.

is it a case of its not used outside Munster but if it was/is its masculine.
But where the word is generally used its feminine ?

I presume tarraing is the more standard form ? in which case its probably worth learning both ?

My "Educational Pronouncing Dictionary of the Irish Language" also says that tarrac is masculine, and Dineen says that tarraing can be either masculine or feminine. The genders of some words are not set in stone, I think.
I think it's good to know both. I would personally say tarrac because that's the word I was taught (and tarrac is what I usually run across in books, on the radio, etc.), but tarraing is okay too and is part of my passive vocabulary.

Tarraingt - is feminine
Tarrac - is masculine (in all the Gaeltacht areas it's used in, at least as far as anyone can tell from the declension pattern of words ending in -ac)

The thing is, you will hardly ever need to know the gender of a verbal noun. I've never seen any use of tarrac that should reveal the gender.

Very occasionally, you find a verbal noun used as a standard noun, and you might see the gender. For example: fiafraí is masculine in Ó Dónaill's dictionary, but you can find "an fhiafraí sin" etc in Munster Irish. But if you ever see it with an article, it will be "an tarrac" either way, as "an" does not lenite a t.

You could need to know the gender before an adjective. http://www.focloir.ie/en/dictionary/ei/draw has this: "the chimney drew the air efficiently bhí tarraingt mhaith sa simléar"

That's probably: bhí tarrac maith sa tsimné in Munster Irish.

With really rare instances (such as the gender of verbal nouns), you would do well to go with whatever is in Ó Dónaill (in this case: tarrac=masculine).

I think the source im using can confuse me sometimes. a lot of phrases i learn come from the Gaschaint Munster version , but it would seem a lot of phrases would use a mix of either Munster forms or Standard .
such as
Anois cuir fé agus tríd í, agus tarraing teann í

or almost never using the syncopated verb forms in the 2nd person sing.
An nDéarfaidh tú le Mamí faoi?
or things like Bíonn siad ar dhá thaobh an bhóthair.
never Bíd or Bíd siad.

but then use things like Chuala go rabhais breoite.
which to my limited knowledge seems a more Munster form ?
