I am looking to get a tattoo on my wedding ring finger. I was planning on doing fiorghrá. Unfortunately it is too long too fit. Could someone let me know if A ghrá is an appropriate translation for my love. I also wants to know the difference between searc and ghrá. Me and my husband are looking to get the tattoos for our upcoming anniversary and we want them to symbolize our love for each other while also paying tribute to my heritage.

"A ghrá" means something like "O' my love." You would only say that when you are talking TO the person you love. If you were talking ABOUT him, you would say "mo ghrá." So I guess the question is, who is the intended reader?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think searc can be either romantic love, or just simply an attraction to someone. Grá is a more general word for love.

You could still go with fíorghrá if you had one letter on each finger.

Thanks Mick. Why do I see different spellings for grá and ghrá depending upon which website. Which is the proper spelling when it's written? Do have know of any other words that express love and devotion that are short in spelling. A stór would mean my treasure? However I'm assuming its same as a ghrá and it would be mo stór unless I'm talking to the person?

I understand Searc to be more specific to romantic love.

Irish words can change a lot depending on context. For example:

Grá (love)
Mo ghrá (my love)
Ár ngrá (our love)

It would take forever to explain all the different situations where a word changes, but there are people on this forum that can give you the correct grammar once you've decided on what phrase you want.

I don't think you'd use those phrases as a form of address. Technically you'd be talking about the person, so:

(Is tú/tusa) mo ghrá go deo "(You are) my love forever"
(Is tú/tusa) m'fhíorghrá go deo "(You are) my true love forever"


grá mo chroí literally means "love of my heart" or "my heart's love", but can also be translated as "my sweetheart", "my true love", etc.

grá is the base form. It changes to ghrá after certain particles and in certain grammatical situations.
