Hopefully some of the dialect experts or people from Conamara can help me.
I was just wondering does the Conamara dialect have three major subdivisions, namely
Cois Fharraige, West Conamara and the Islands. Is that right or is it divided differently?

Different sources divide it differently. (How do you divide a spectrum?)

Wiki just has two: "Connemara" and "The Aran Islands".

Ó Siadhail has "Aran Islands" as a subgroup of "West Galway/Connemara" and "Cois Fhairrge, Rosmuck, Letermore, Carna and Leenane" listed as separate dialects within "West Galway/Connemara".

My "specialty" is Connemara Irish, particularly Cois Fhairrge dialect, but I can also speak Ulster and Munster Irish with native-level pronunciation.

Would Ceantar na nOilean be different enough from the Aran Islands and the mainland to be classed as it's own sub-dialect? And don't forget about Ráth Cairn in Meath.

I suppose there are as many dialects as there are people. It just depends on how much detail you want to get into.

Edit: This is the word I was trying to think of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiolect

I'm not sure where the divides are.
Like Breandán said they go into each other like a spectrum.

There's Cois Fharraige, which probably goes as far as Ros a'mhíl (again not sure).
Then from Ros a'mhíl to An Cheathrú Rua to where you turn off to the Islands is another mini-dialect.
Then there's the Islands (Ceantar na nOileáin, Ros Muc).
Carna Cill Chiaráin areas are call Iorras Aithneach.

All of them are really mini-dialects with little between them.
Some words are pronounced slightly differently. Some dialects might have words that the others don't have. You'd need a good ear (like our Benjamin) to tell the difference between them.
The differences would more likely perceived between Iorras Aithneach and Cois Fharraige. Again I'm not an expert.

For example-

I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

If I am understanding this post correctly, Bríd, you are suggesting that An Lon Dubh analyses both books thoroughly and writes a synopsis for ILF. You're a tough taskmaster, but I like your style!

Go raibh míle maith agat, a Bhríd!. Do cheannaíos an dá leabhar agus bhíos i n-Iorras Aithneach ag an deireadh seachtaine.

Actually I've been writing notes. I might post the basic differences when I get through the books. So Bríd's evil scheme might pay off! :D
