I saw a request on another forum today, and this fella was looking for information about putting a name on a trophy. He was confused after seeing the inscription on the Sam Maguire Cup. It says "Buan Chorn Sam Mag Uidhir" on it, or something near that. Does anyone here know anything about the spelling/grammar mistakes on the cup? I thought "buanchorn" or "corn SMU bhuain" might be more correct.

Any chance it was Buán ('trophy') rather than Buan ('permanent')? It's only a thought.

A close inspection of some of the larger pictures on Google Images shows no sign of a síniú fada over the "a" in the first word.

We don't get to see the trophy itself too often in Limerick, unfortunately!

There is, however, a hyphen: buan-chorn. Buanchorn would be standard nowadays, but it could easily have been spelt buan-chorn before the spelling reformations.
