I never realised it until just now, but that's almost the same tune again, just adapted to a classical scale instead of a blues scale.

Yes, I know it's the same tune. My point was it originated in the U.S. Franc's post implied it originated in Scotland.

Off to Dublin, etc is part of The Merry Ploughboy, a song which is listed as traditional Irish.Can't seem to find author, etc It may or may not be Irish- American

The Merry Ploughboy is an English song. In the original, the singer joins the RHA (Royal Horse Artillery) and someone re-wrote a few of the lyrics to make it about the IRA. I'm afraid I can't help you with the author of either version though.
