I've just realised that Neidín is the Irish name for Kenmare.

it confused me as well when I heard people refer to it as Neidín, I had no idea where that was, it sounds nothing like the English version of the name.

Like Dublin, the English and the Irish name most commonly used are much different

Ceann Mara means the head of the sea - the furthest point where the sea reaches up in the bay and the bay is known as Inbhear Scéine - the River Roughty is An Ruachtach. But they prefer to call the town Neidín - perhaps someone here will know why.

Not Quite, often, particularly in the West the English name will be somewhat comparable to the Irish name. Especially if it has an Irish sounding name, Kenmare -which you can easily see the link with Ceann Mara, as Franc pointed out.

I dont think its a case of they prefer to call the town, but more that is what the town is called in Irish and someone for some reason mixed the name up with another nearby geographical location.

Here in West Kerry, there is
Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, which is often referred to as Buailtín by the locals . buailtín being the original name and Baile an Fheirtéaraigh the name of the townland near by, where I here the police station was once located, but when they moved it to Buailtín they changed the name of the village,not the station.

Or There are two townlands near me called Ballydavid in English, which is confusing, but in Irish one is
Baile Dháith (you can see the link) and the other Baile na nGall ( )

I remember asking here about Ventry and Ceann Trá - I was told that Ventry was the name of the family who owned the village and the land around it.
