I saw a little bit of the film, 'The Guard' yesterday. It was just as funny as I remembered, but I thought it was odd that Brendan Gleeson's character referred to Irish as Gaelic. I have never encountered an Irish person referring to it as Gaelic, certainly not in this part of the country. It must be for the American audience, but seemed very unnatural.

Anyway, for anyone who hasn't seen the film, I highly recommend it. One scene in it where the FBI agent calls to doors and the occupants only answer in Irish reminded me of Redwolf's 'Fun with Telemarketers' thread! viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2965

I've run across a lot of people who think that speaking Irish is merely speaking English with an Irish accent – heh, heh

When I'm talking to somebody in person (not on this forum), I usually just say Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic so that everybody can understand what I'm talking about.

What a great film it is. I can't wait to see McDonagh's new film with Gleeson in it, Calvary.

In Scotland I've heard people just saying Gàidhlig to me when they want to name the language they're talking about, so why don't you just call it Gaeilge/Gaelainn srl and leave it to them to work out what you mean?

ill use Gaelic if referring to the language with people from America or else where.
Generally I use the word Gaelic for reference to the Scottish variant.

My brother actually bumped into him while he was working in TG4 as part of his work experience a few years back

I've met Irish people who speak Irish and call it Irish, and Irish people who don't speak Irish and call it Irish.
I've met Irish people who speak Gaelic and call it Gaelic, and Irish people who don't speak Gaelic and call it Gaelic.
And I've met people from other countries who call it one or the other.

Tomato, tomato, potato, potato, let's call the whole thing off.
