Good morning all, I was hoping somebody could advise me on the translation and dialect to use on a tattoo to remember my Dad. Firstly, he was born in Newry so what dialect would that be? (please excuse my ignorance) I'd like the tattoo to read "He lived, he loved, he laughed, he left" -Dad-

There are some different choices one might make with the verbs (especially the last one), and there are some dialectical variants, but here's one literal approach which tries to keep each pretty short (which is not always easy when going from one language to another):

Mhair sé,
thug sé grá
rinne sé gáire
d'imigh sé

As always, wait for others to comment, and we recommend getting three to agree before anything so permanent as a tattoo.

Newry is in Ulster, but I can't think of any dialect variations that would affect this.

Thanks for your replies, I appreciate it. I'm assuming that the punctuation is the same in English? It may same a silly question but I really want to get it right. Also, what would be the best word for 'Dad'?
