I'm reading 'Seacht mBua an Éirí Amach' by Pádraic Ó Conaire.
So a man and a woman meet up after quarrelling many years previously. He has been blind since their last encounter. At the time of the quarrel, he offended her and she was eaten up with a desire for revenge. So she sought him out, came up to him and:
'chaith sí nimh scólta éigin idir an dá shúil air, gur imigh sé leis ina ghealt scréachach mhire....'

So she did something to his eyes, but what did she do? Help me or I can't go on!

Sounds like she threw acid in his eyes, or something equally nasty. It doesn't go into detail, it just says "nimh scólta éigin" which means "some kind of scalding poison."

Thanks for that contribution, Mick. In looking up the words separately, that's more or less what I was coming out with too.
Somehow, as the last line in this section of the story (and therefore the page-turning climax) it didn't seem definite enough for my liking. I wonder why he couldn't have made it more precise? Oh well, mine not to reason why...

Whatever it was it was strong enough to leave him blind.
