Hi! I was wondering if anyone could translate "We're fated to pretend" for me. Any help at all would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Here's a try by a beginner. Wait for more experienced opinions though. I ndán go cuir i gcéill

Does anyone have anything to add to kenailan's translation? If it's right or not?

Perhaps:

Tá cur i ngéill i ndán dúinn. literally "There is pretence is in store for us"

or

Tá sé i ndán dúinn ligean orainn ... literally "It is in store for us to pretend we ..."

There are other ways to say "pretend" though, depending on the context. What exactly does the song mean by "pretend"? Does it follow on from or to the verse before or after?

I rather like the version given by braoin (a member of this forum who hasn't been banned yet by IGTF) on IGTF:

Is dual dúinn ligean orainn (which is much the same as Breandán's Tá sé i ndán dúinn ligean orainn.)

seconded thats how I would say it, but I think more context is needed.

The words I want translated are from a song by MGMT called "Time To Pretend." If you're not familiar with it, the sentence I want is from the chorus. I'll copy it here.

We're fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

So, to clarify, the song isn't specifying anything that we are fated to pretend, it's just a general statement... I don't know if this helps at all...

I'm also not averse to changing the wording of it, such as, "Our fate is to pretend." The concept is what I like about it, rather than the wording, which I admit is a little awkward.

I think we were just waiting for another person to agree with Braoin's suggestion elsewhere, which was:

Is dual dúinn ligean orainn

Errigal seconded it by suggesting it and I think it is good too.

Anyone else?

(Would it make any difference to add féin to the end, i.e., Is dual dúinn ligean orainn féin?)
