I see that this means - next door, but why? Can anyone explain why it means what it does?
- and while I'm about it, perhaps Bríd could tell me this - I'm going down the Main Street on Street View in An Cheathrú Rua and on the front of Béal Dorais (in red next to An Chistin) there is something written up there on either side of the name, but I can't make out what it says. On the right it says (something) den scoth. Could you tell me what's written up there, please?

It's called Béal Dorais as it is next to the pub, and the same owners.
So they just pop next door to the off-licience.

Go raibh math agat - in fact I found out that it's part of a chain of wine merchants called Next Door. I see that nearly all the 'commerçants' have signs up in Irish - I was following the Main Street coming in from the north along a lake, past the church and what must be a school on the left and a small supermarket on the right. There's a house called the Tailor's House - which looks as if it is a pub, but was it originally a tailor's shop?

It is a pub. There is also a Chinese restaurant renting space in the building.

It was a Taylor's house many years ago. Long before my time. The name has still remained in the family generations later. Seán Choilín an Taillúra, etc.
But the present owners of the pub have no connection to that family. But the name is kept as it has been the name of the pub from the beginning.
