Hi, I'd like to know when to use 'gabh' and 'téigh' for 'to go', and what are the associated dialects for each.

First, is 'Téigh' strictly Ulster Irish for 'Gabh' ? It sounds it comes from 'Tar'?

Second, how do you use 'Gabh' and is it only Conamara Irish?

(For example can I say 'Gabhaim chun/go dtí..' and 'Téim chun/go dtí' for 'I go to..' ?)

I know -Táim ag dul - is Munster Irish but I'm not sure if it also uses 'gabh' and 'téigh' in the simple present, not using 'ag dul' but everyday tasks like I go there every morning. Maybe there are other verbs for 'to go'.

téigh is the imperative form 2nd singular to say "go !".
In Ulster we say "gabh" instead.
"Tar" means "come!", it's not the same verb.



it depends, gabh may be several things, it's the imperative form in several dialects, it's the root of the verb to go in the future in certain dialects (Connemara, I think): gabhfaidh mé...




I don't think anybody says "gabhaim".
I think everybody says "téim" or "théim" or "teighim" or things like that.

What a coincidence! I happen to have just reached exercise 41 in Teach Yourself Irish (Munster version) and the vocabulary for it has the item:-

gabhaim (goum) I take, I go; ghaibh sé - he went.

This phrase is used in the exercise thus: an tseachtain seo ghaibh tharainn = last week.
Is this perhaps a use of the verb in the Munster dialect? Dillon and Ó Cróinín seem fairly consistent and reliable about what they put in their wonderful book.

I didn't know that. So far, to say "he went" I only knew "chuaigh sé".

That used to be the case, but sadly to to the caighdeán oifigiúil, its very rare that you'd here gaibh sé etc...- téim and chuaigh are used mainly now.
