Hi, everyone!
I'm looking for a word for companions, mess-mates, associates in an endeavour. In Irish. For a short story I'm writing. And was wondering what the difference was between "gnátha" and "comthaigh". The teanglann.ie website suggests both are literary words for companion. Chapter XIV of the Táin has "dom aés chomtha & dom chomaltaib & dom chomdinib" for "to my comrades and foster-brothers and age-mates", which suggests the "comthach" route has pedigree!
Any thoughts?
Go raibh maith agat!
Jon

All literary words have pedigree, but any words marked in fgb as "lit" are not in the living speech.

Cómhlach (pr: kólach)
Cumrádaí (pr: cumarádaí)
Cúmpánach
Cómh-ghleacaí
Cuíbhreannach (pr: cuíreannach)
Cómhalta (pr: kólha)
Lucht cómhluadair (pl) (pr: locht cóluadair)

I like cómh-ghleacaí out of this list.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. So, are my words completely out of the running? It is science fiction, so I don't need it to be current vernacular. I particularly like the shape of the word "gnátha". Do either maintain any connotations, even if they're no longer used?
Thanks for the suggestions. FGB suggests that "gleacaí" might have pugnacious or other not wholly wholesome associations. Or am I reading too much into it?
