Can you pronounce the sounds of Irish is the first question, because if you can't, it makes the explanation a bit hard to get

Jay Bee--
I don't know if I can pronounce the sounds of Irish - I don't speak Irish.
I wasn't able to open your link - I tried in two different browsers.

Anybody else able to help me pronounce "ghaelaigh"?
Any help is much appreciated!

Sorry, I meant to repost Jay Bee's soundfile on our server for you but got caught up doing other things and clean forgot. Gabh mo leithscéal. (Sorry.)

Seo dhuit é (Here it is):

Here's another from me for reference:

http://www.awyr.com/ILF/saewndfaylz/Ghaelaigh.mp3

Ghaelaigh
GHAY-lee
/ɣe:Li:/

The broad gh /γ/ (gh in my phonics) is very similar a German uvular r (deeper in the throat than a French r). Imagine gargling to soothe a sore throat.

The broad L is "dark" like the L in the American pronunciation of "love" (but not the British Received pronunciation).

The AY in the first syllable is actually not a diphthong but a pure long vowel like the "ai" in "air" minus the r.
