I complained about the comments not being up when someone recommended this video on Facebook. Apparently either someone contacted her or she's a member of that particular Facebook group, but she "approved" them shortly thereafter. Says she doesn't have time to monitor the video closely.

Seems a bit of public pressure works :)

I think if you're going to make something like that, and make comments moderated, you have an obligation to keep on top of it. Saying "I don't have time" is a bit of a cop out. If a person truly doesn't have the time to maintain something like that, the comments can always be changed to "unmoderated."

Ah well, with what they've already been exposed to, you can hardly expect it to make matters worse....

Hi guys! I'm a learner, and use Duolingo to practice Irish. Galaxyrocker's comment about the mistakes in the video interested me, because I've actually used said video to help me get a few sounds right. First off, I appreciate all your comments - she really doesn't differentiate between the 'd' and 't' sounds at all and it gets really confusing. But this didn't occur to me before and that video has been around for months. I do hear the differences when native speakers talk, but again, being told different things is confusing.

But, I personally booked a holiday to a Gaeltacht and bought a book, with accompanying audio while I was there to make sure I get my pronunciation as close to authentic as possible, before commencing any meaningful study on my own. I know not everyone can do that - it takes time and money.

This video, even with all it's mistakes, is the least confusing resource I've found, that doesn't require you to look up the pronunciation of every single individual words and leads to reading on your own. Considering it's mistakes, are any of you able to suggest something more correct and just as easy to understand, made by a native speaker?

The above are free, and explain most what you need

They're both fantastic and extremely thorough and thank you for suggesting them, but unfortunately I don't know the phonetic alphabet and all of those linguistic terms are confusing. E.g. velar offglide, palatal offglide, onglide, voiced labiodental fricative, back vowels, allophones all appeared in the space of a random three paragraphs of the phonology article.

Also great and really helpful when I need to get one particular word right. But requires me (or any other learner) to look up literally every word and generally doesn't teach me how to pronounce words in general, by looking at them. Doesn't explain notions of slender/broad, fadas etc. and how they affect pronunciation.

Yeah, an experiential grounding is what you need or what they terms are referring to don't really make sense.

I've posted a few times a guide to pronunciation, but I don't think anyone has ever followed it. Maybe I should make my own pronunciation video :)

Do you get the basic orthography rule as to what is broad and slender?
