Léamh mé alt san Independent agus chuir sé fearg an domhain orm. Basically bhí an iriseoir ag rá gur xenophobes 'gus racists iad daoine ar son na gaeilge. Níl aon racism ionamféin ar chor ar bith táim fós chun labhairt le gaeilgeoir atá i gcoinne cultúraí difrúile. I nginearalta, sílim go bhfuil an-meas againn agus níl clue dá laghad agam cár fuair an scríobhneoir an idea sin. Seo link den alt, b'aoibheann liom eisteacht le bhur dtuairim ar an alt? Seo link dó.. http://www.independent.ie/opinion/analy ... 42147.html

ps. Tá an-brón orm roimh mo chaighdeán gaeilge. Ní bhíonn an-seans agam chun í a cleachtadh faoi lathair.

Só, basically, ní maith leí í mar bíonn an Coimisineir Teanga ag iarraidh rudaí a bheith ar fáil i nGaeilge? Dáiríre?

Quote:
But it's the mindset of the people who made the complaints that is more than ridiculous: it's frightening.

Céard? Nach bhfuil cead ag na daoine le Gaeilge úsáid a bhaint asti agus rud a léigh inti? Tá siad as a mearbhaill mar bhíonn siad ag iarraidh rudaí a bheith ar fáil i nGaeilge? Uafás na n-uafás!

Tá an t-alt seo uafásach. Ach, nach bhfuil an Indepenent úfásach ar aon nós? Ní léim é, ach chuala mé go bhfuil sé uafásach.

Some might refer to The Irish Independent as a 'west-Brit' publication, but I couldn't possibly comment....

Propaganda in éadan na Gaeilg. Is cosúil go bhfuil sé comónta go leor ar na laetha seo. Faghthar a leithéid in Albain agus ins an Bhreatain Bheag fosta, sílim.
Tá daoiní ann nach maith leofa na teangthacha sin so ghníonn siad a ndícheall le hiad a laghdú.
Ach ní dóigh liom go n-athróchaidh sé rud ar bith...

Would these articles in the Irish Times redress the balance in anyway?

www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/when-i ... -1.2082623
and
www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/taking ... -1.1953455
and I'd like to put in a mention of this, as well -
www.corkpoetryfest.net/piafbrel_project.html
As you can see Liam Ó Muirthile has managed to translate the songs of Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf into Irish as well as some of the poems of Jacques Prévert and Paul Verlaine. I don't know if he's published them yet, but I'd very much like to see them. You might have noticed that I've been trying to translate 'Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau' de Jacques Prévert - if anyone could help me out with that I'd be very grateful.

Accusing one's political adversaries of xenophobia or racism has become the go-to stink bomb for people who are refractory or antipathetic to language revival and protection movements. We see it here all the time in Québec and in the rest of Canada aimed at those who fight for French-language rights. It's uncanny how this article replicates the same arguments as the reactionary Anglophones and Anglophiles here:

(1) that the various movements to protect the minority language are based on a hatred of English people;

(2) that English's importance as a global language ought to somehow automatically volley into its predominance in a country or region that has its own native language;

(3) that if people hate the minority language it's because they've had it crammed down their throats and not because they're just too lazy or stupid to learn it and use it, and not that they've been educated to despise it.

The last one really gets in my craw because it basically is this :

Person 1 : Did you ever learn Irish?
Person 2 : No. I loathe Irish!
Person 1 : Why is that?
Person 2 : Because they tried to teach it to me!

In France it's been a bit different - over the years, successive governments have aimed to stifle the use of regional languages. Unfortunately there are many parts of France where the younger generations haven't been encouraged to speak them and I see that in certain areas of the Midi, the generation that still speaks the various forms of Occitan fluently is steadily dying out. One exception is Roussillon, where the neighbouring Catalunya government, on the other side of the border, has been putting a lot of effort in promoting Catalan there.
Our neighbours in the village in Haute Provence, where we spend our holidays, still speak Gavot, but their grandchildren don't and it's the same story in branches of our extended family in Auvergne and in Corsica.
