I'm looking for a tattoo translation but am not looking for the specificity that many are. I originally wanted the word "free" (as in, 'I am a liberated person,' not 'free of charge'...) but the complications between those two are a little scary for me. I was wondering if there was any specific phrase in Gaelic which meant "I am free" in the way I mean, or anything simple like that. Even if there is one word that means the type of free I am talking about. Thank you for your help!!

"Saor" means "free" in the sense you mean. "Free of charge" would be "Saor in aisce," so there's no complication there, but there is the worry that "saor" can also mean "cheap."

Perhaps it would be better to use "Saoirse," which means "Freedom" (no ambiguity). Or you could go with "Neamhspleách" ("Independent"), or even "Gan Srian" ("Unrestrained").

Here are a couple of suggestions on my part -

There's 'free and easy' - réchúiseach (but that can also mean someone you can't count on)
or a free man - saorfhear or saoirseach, so you could have - 'I'm a free man' which would be either - Is saorfhear mé - or - Is saoirseach mé. But you'd better wait for confirmation from the others.

I have a particular fondness for the word 'saoirse' for obvious reasons! However, is 'saorspioraid' of any benefit in this case - 'free spirit'?

Not an easy one to translate. Saorspioraid is the plural (= free spirits). I can't find any examples of 'spirit' being used in this figurative way to refer to a person. Maybe wait for a few more suggestions.
