Not a word I use frequently, but one of my children heard a character on tv using it and asked me what the Irish equivalent is. Needless to say, I hadn't a clue. Are there any 'dudes' in the Gaeltachtaí? 8-)

Apart from the very obvious - buachaill, I've found - cuilceach and diúlach - as possible candidates for the job.

Yeah like that's a way harsh gnarly question bra, so like I have few suggestions:

A fhir, sin an leagan is bodacious dar liom
A dhuine
A fheara, má tá ana-chuileachta ann le cúpla dudes.

I think he means - brother, I don't know what else that could possibly mean.

Rud Mericeánach atá ann. Chuala mé "breh" cúpla bliain ó shin freisin.

In California, "dude" is used in much the same way "a chara" or "a mhac" would be in Irish (it's used mostly with men, but can be applied to women as well). If this was someone talking to a guy, I'd go with "a mhac."

That's assuming the character was addressing someone. We'll also use "dude" here as a simple exclamation...similar to "wow!" As in "Dude! Look at that sunset!"

Another, albeit old-fashioned, use of the word is to refer to visitors to newcomers or visitors to cattle ranches who don't themselves have any ranching skills (for example, a ranch that hosts guests is called a "dude ranch" and the guests are called "dudes"). It can also be used in that context to refer to someone who's a bit of a softy.

"Bra" is used mostly in Hawaii. It seems to be making inroads here, but "bro" would be more common.

I use 'a chara' sometimes, but I'm not really the 'dude' type! Some things just don't translate, I think!

Yeah. If she's asking for an Irish equivalent, though, I'd say "a mhac" is the closest (assuming we're talking about a form of address).

We use "dude" all the time here. It's part of surfer dialect, and as such is something that all Santa Cruzans use to some extent.
