Hi everybody,

I would like to gift an engraved whisky flask fo christmas but i don't know how to translate this proverb (or if you know an irish proverb with the same signification ?

"Fortune knocks once at every man's door"

Thanks for your help

This is my attempt at it - (but you'd better wait for confirmation, I'm only a beginner)
Cnagann an t-ádh aon uair amháin ar an doras gach uile dhuine.

This might sound like a strange question, but do you mean that it knocks only once or that it knocks at least once or that it knocks exactly once? It may influence the translation.

It's a good question ! :)
I don't exactly know the good mean of this proverb, but i prefer the optimistic translation : Fortune knocks (at least) once at every man's door

Ah well, I had the idea that it meant only the once that fortune came knocking at your door, which is what I tried to say up above there.

A suggestion -

Bíonn an t-ádh le chuile dhuine uair éicint.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.
