Just FYI: From 1788 to 1853 25,566 women convicts and orphans were transported to Australia, about half of those came from Ireland. They left behind husbands and children and family and crossed the world, usually for petty crimes, but at least they were not hung. Life was rugged for them both on the journey and on arrival. Roses from the Heart Project is building a collection of clothe bonnets for each female transportee, and for 400 babies who died in the Womens Factory. Bonnets have been donated from the four corners of the world, a thousand from the inmates of Dublin Gaol, some made from shirts off the back of Irish and Australian politicians who have taken an interest.
