Sorry, I have the book!
Eachtra would to me be closest to "major events, adventures". Eachtraí a shaeil would be something like "The major interesting points in his life".
The next line is a bit difficult:
Ní nach iontach, níorbh fhearr liom beart go gcuimhneodh sé air
Sometimes Irish uses simply the singular of the noun to stand in for "any other" rather than using aon X eile.
Níorbh fhearr liom = I wouldn't prefer/I would not have preferred (Irish doesn't distinguish the Conditional and the Conditional perfect.)
beart = an act, a deed (but here "any other deed")
go gcuimhneodh sé air = which he would think of, which he would have though of
By the way "Ach......anois" often equates to the English But now.
Ach ba gheairid an mhoill anois gur aithníos nár dhuine mar chách a bhí agam ach seanóir géarchúiseach stuamtha aibidh – go raibh fios a aigne féin go feille-bhinn aige. Dá chomhartha san, in ionad a bheith ag brath ar cheist uaimse chun é a bhogadh chun cainte, níorbh annamh a chuireadh sé ar bun scéal nó eachtra a thit amach do féin. Do réir a chéile, mar a mhéadaigh m'aitheantas air, thána ar an dtuairim go raibh sé curtha roimis aige, ó casadh mo leithéid ina chuibhreann, cúntas a thabhairt dom ar eachtraí móra a shaoil. Ní nach iontach, níorbh fhearr liom beart go gcuimhneodh sé air
But now it was a short delay before I realised that it wasn't a typical person (literally "a person like all others") I had, but a witty, level-headed, ripe (as in "quick") old fella, who knew his own mind sweetly (very well). Because of that, instead of depending on a question from in order to budge him to speak, it wasn't rare that he would start up a story (cur ar bun means to start up, establish) or an adventurous account which happened to himself. (In accordance with each other)* as I got to know him better, I came to the opinion that it had been decided by him, since somebody like my had happened into his company, to give me a short account of the major points of his life. Unsurprisingly, I wouldn't have though he could have thought of a better thing to do.
WFM,
Cad é am t-ainm ar an leabhar atá á léamh agat agus cé hé an t-údar ? Tá an cuma ann go bhfuil sé roinnt beag dúshlánach.
