I'm currently reviewing a book some here may find useful, especially if you teach Irish, or if you're working with (or thinking of starting) a study/conversation group.

It's "An Ghaeilge ó Lá go Lá," by A.J. Hughes, and it's a book of graded readings, each followed by a set of questions about the reading and the answers to the questions, which must be put in the correct order (all of which are in Irish). Each story is also accompanied by a "Seanfhocal an Lae."

The 70 readings are graded from absolute beginner to more advanced reader. For example, the very first reading starts off with simple introductions ("Gabh mo leithscéal, ach cé thusa?" Is mise Máire. Cé thusa?") and the last reading in the book begins with "Bhí mé ag siúl thart le teach Uí Bhaoill an lá faoi dheareadh. Bhí chóir a bheith gach duine sa teaghlach ag obair fán teach." There's a glossary and a brief grammar guide in the back of the book.

As I started going through it, it occurred to me that it would be a really nice resource for members of a study/convo group to have, especially if the group includes people of mixed levels. They could use the readings as a jumping-off point for conversation, perhaps starting with one of the simpler readings and then progressing to one of the more difficult ones.

This would also be a good reader for someone who is studying on his or her own, as the short readings are, perhaps, a bit less daunting than trying to read an entire book.

The author is from Ulster, so some of the more dialect-dependent forms lean toward Ulster, but he does include elements from other dialects in some of the readings (and those differences can provide another conversation point). The focus is on everyday, conversational Irish.

This book is, I'm sure, available from all the major on-line Irish booksellers: An Siopa Leabhar, An Siopa Gaeilge, Litriocht.com, etc. The publisher is Clólann Bheann Mhadagáin (Ben Madigan Press).

Hughes is also the author of the extremely useful "Leabhar Bhriathra na Gaeilge" series (I have An Leabhar Laghdaithe, and it's indispensable!)
