It would be later on in the year. Probably July or August. I am not sure when the big tourist season is there, but I would like to avoid that if at all possible.

Well that's the hight of the tourist season. September might be better. Schools are open and there fewer families visiting with the kiddies. The weather is still pleasant and it's easier to find a B&B

I agree. Either that, or earlier in the summer. I was there in late July/early August this past summer, and anything remotely tourist-oriented was pretty packed.

The last time I was in Ireland (in 2008), I was there at the end of June, and it was a little less crazy (you could actually sit down and have a quiet pint at Roarty's in Gleann Cholm Cille without having to fight 20 other people for a seat!). It was still pretty wild in Dublin, though! I ended up in a hostel with about 50 French middle school kids on holiday...didn't get a wink of sleep!

It's a trade off, though. If you do want to do a Gaeltacht program at all, most of those take place during the summer, so your best bet would probably be to go early in the season. If you're not planning to do that this trip, going in the autumn or spring might be better.
