It's a bit confusing even in English, I must admit. The Gaeltacht Summer Awards are not considered Fulbright awards because they're not funded by the Fulbright Commission. The granting organization is actually "Ireland-United States Commission for Education Exchange" (now there's a genitive nightmare!) , and the funding comes partially from The Department of Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht, and from the National Lottery of Ireland (thank you, all you lovely Lotto ticket buyers!). But you apply through the Fulbright Commission, and they oversee disbursement of the grants.

To make matters even more confusing, people (myself included) have a tendency to refer to this as "getting a Fulbright award," even though the Fulbright Commission states very firmly that they AREN'T, technically, Fulbright awards.

I'm hoping not to have to go into this too deeply (and thanking God the interview is being taped, rather than aired live!).

While we're on the topic, what might be the best way to say "Gaeltacht Summer Award" in Irish? Genitives still get my head in a whirl! Normally, if I were having a conversation with a friend in Irish, I'd just say that bit in English, and that may be the best course for this as well, but I'm curious.

That's a toughie, its hard to interpret the Summer part.

Maybe;

Gaisce Gaeltachta an tSamhraidh

Gradam Gaeltachta an tSamhraidh

Wait for some more input.

Just a quick question regarding the genitive. Should/ could this be "faoi riarachán Choimisiún Fulbright"?

Three nouns together is a bit tricky. I know its possible for the middle noun not to be put in the genitive i.e. Comisiúin here (though that would be right as well). But usually the middle noun is lenited regardless, no?

Looks like it wasn't such a quick question after all! :dog:

Crossed with Redwolf

Cian.

Coimisiún Fulbright would be a proper noun and hence lenited in the genitive. Exactly as you said: riarachán Choimisiún Fulbright

 Yes, I should have said faoi riariachán Choimisiún Fulbright (Nice catch, a Chiain). I thought afterwards "I must go back and check if I lenited the C on Comisiún properly" but yez all were too quick.

Just for reference, focal.ie has:

Coimisiún na hÉireann-Stát Aontaithe um Malartú Oideachasúil

Or perhaps:

Duais do Shamhradh sa Ghaeltacht "Gaeltacht Summer Award" literally "Award for a Summer in the Gaeltacht"
Duaiseanna do Shamhradh sa Ghaeltacht "Gaeltacht Summer Awards"

(based partly on Tréimhse Foghlama sa Ghaeltacht a Gaeltacht teacher training programme)

(I'm giving an interview re the Gaeltacht Summer Awards on Tuesday. Yes, in Irish. Yes, I am insane).

I hope you don't mind me adding another to the mix. I'm taking 'award' to mean a 'prize' or something which is achieved / won:

If I were asked to translate this, I might be inclined to put it something like
Ní scoláireacht Fullbright í an duais seo, ach tá sí á bronnadh ag an gCoimisiún Fullbright.

and 'Gaeltacht summer award':
Duais samhraidh Gaeltachta

How did the interview go?

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

It's not until 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, so I've got about 45 minutes to wait yet.

Well, it's done. Predictably, I'm sitting here analyzing the mistakes I made, but in balance I think it went OK. I don't do well on the phone, even in English, so we'll see.

The broadcast is next Tuesday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Ireland (11:30 a.m. in California) on Ráidió na Life. It's part of a larger broadcast on scholarships to study in Ireland.
