gnéas = sex.

Is there an Irish equivalent to the phrase 'the birds and the bees'?

I always wondered about the word "gnéas". Looks like there's no written evidence of it before Ó Dónaill was published, which makes it very dubious...

Could it have something to do with the prudish nature of Irish society over the last 200 odd years?
Its still prudish to some degree. Cant recall how many beginners classes I sat in where we did body parts, Always leaving out key ones.

they are fairly essential. I mean if you have an accident with your zipper you dont want to be consulting a dictionary before you present yourself at A&E.

I remember an old granny saying "tá brí eile le 'adharc', 'erection' mar a déarfá i mBéarla, ho, ho, ho!" when I was in a small group discussing one of the Blasket books, to which somebody in the group replied angrily "But that isn't something you'd say in polite conversation" :rolleyes:

I am currently trying to find a resource to deal with the whole issue for children - coming of age stuff. I have been told that the HSE provides a resource, but that it's only available in English with Irish subtitles. I have sent in a request for an Irish language version so I'll see what comes back. I will be quite furious if no such resource for children/teenagers being raised through Irish exists. I'll let you know how I get on. Meanwhile if anyone knows of such a resource, I would appreciate the info. Haven't had to deal with the really technical questions yet, but you never know the day nor the hour!!! :mrgreen:

but I'm not sure "gnéas" exists while words like "craiceann a bhualadh", "pit", "bod" etc do exist and aren't coined things, so I wonder why they needed to invent a word to say "sex", as well as weird Anglicisms like "gnéas a bheith agat le duine" while obviously the Irish language has native ways to say that...
