It's interesting how the map above parallels this one of the kingdoms:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ireland900.png

As for the 'North Connacht' dialects, would Breifne not be due to geography and the North Mayo one be more of a more recent contact dialect as West Ulster speakers made their way down to North Connacht after the pogroms of the 18th century?

I used GIMP its an open source software very similar to photoshop.
fairly easy and quick to create. it would be easy enough to create a more accurate one if I had the info. Not really sure of the boundary's , just made an uneducated guess,

what pogroms in the 18th century are you referring too?

Mythological halves of Ireland:

Ptolomy's map:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlkik/ihm/ire150.htm
Quote:
The proportion of Ptolemy's geographical and tribal names that can be identified with names occuring in Irish literature is perhaps one in four. This has lead some to believe a map was created at a time earlier than Ptolemy. Previous to the Roman conquest in Britain the only Greek geographer who is known to have visited the 'Pretanic Isles' (aka Britain & Ireland) was Pytheas of Massalia, whose voyage is cited in the latter half of the 4th century B.C.

It even became a surname. My grandmother's family, the McNulty's, is numerous in the area from Swinford to Foxford in Mayo, arriving from Ulster in the 17th century. The Irish form of the name is Mac an Ultaigh. The surname also exists in other parts of Mayo, and in Offaly and Louth.

Interesting. It would make it one of, if not, the newest native names. Suimiúil!

Notice how the areas with highest Irish usage correlate with the worst land

Dialects may have reflected natural boundaries too (like rivers)
