I'm trying to work out a word for word translation of Pangur Bán. I wouldn't want to criticise in any way all those eminent writers who have created such great literary masterpieces that we are given as translations of it, but I would like to approach the meaning of it in a more precise manner, shall we say.
I'm using the various glossaries available on Lexilogos as well as - edil.qub.ac.uk.
cechtar means both or each - for example
nathar fria saindán is given to mean - his special art, but trying find each individual word (and its meaning) is proving more complicated than I imagined. Is there a literal translation out there somewhere or could some one help me out please?

It's very difficult to parse unless you know the grammar.

cechtar nathar fria saindán

cechtar = Both

Fria = *Fri a = at his.

Sain = Special, particular

Dán = Poem, art.

And now Nathar.

In Old Irish the first person pronoun was me in the singular, sinn us in the plural. However Old Irish also had a dual (which the Modern Dialects sometimes use). For the first person pronoun this was also sinn us (two).

However their genitives were:
Díim = of me (Modern Irish: Díom)
Nathar = of us (two)
Díin = of us (Modern Irish: Dúinn)

Hence:
Cechtar Nathar = Both of us (two).
