Hi,
I would like to get a tattoo of the word family with the infinity symbol. I want the word Family to mean my husband and my 3 boys.

Could you please let me know if Teaghlach is the right word for what I am looking for.

Thank you for your time
Annie

If you just mean your "household," then Teaghlach is fine. If you plan to include grandkids, daughters/sons-in-law, etc. in that definition down the road, I might lean more toward "Muintir" or "Gaolta."

Wait for more input.

feaimilí

You may need it in the old spelling:

feaimiliġe

I've never heard or seen that used. It looks like it's just an Irish phonetic rendering of the English word "family."

Teaghlach is what the officials use.

People in the gaeltacht will often use the English loanword feaimilí instead, especially since the Irish words for "family", i.e.,, muintir, clann, comhluadar, teaghlach, treibh, cúram, muirín, etc., all have nuances not generally included in the English "family", particularly in the sense of a "nuclear family".

Hi,

Thank you! I have a lot to think about but I really do want my word family to also have my husband included! I need to think if I want it to also be daughter in laws and grandchildren later on in life.
I was reading up on your forum and I thought muintir did not incorporate my husband but only blood relations. Am I wrong?

Again, thank you for your time

It's the opposite, actually. "Muintir" refers to the entire family-reunion crowd. You can even through friends and neighbors on the pile! It's roughly equivalent to the English word "folk."

"Teaghlach" would cover your husband as well. It's roughly analogous to "household," and is often used to refer to what we might call "the nuclear family" (parents & kids).

'Teaghlach' in it's meaning reflects the fact that very few houses in the past were composed solely of a nuclear family (unless you lived in a hut) because a number would have had to work in concert to keep the show on the road
