Hello,

One of my favorite poems of all time is by Robert Frost and I since most of my heritage is Irish, I would love to get the Irish translation for the phrase, "the road less traveled" tattooed on my shoulder. Thank you in advance for all your help!

What does it mean to you?
There may be a better idiomatic way to say it in Irish.

To me it means not being a follower and making my own path in the world and not following others just because that seems to be the popular route to go. I hope that helps. Thank you for taking the time to help.

That was translated several years ago on the old forum. Here are the several translations offered (most were offered by the same person):

an bóthar is lú a thaistilítear
(the road least traveled)

an bóthar is lú a shiúltar
(... least walked)

an bóthar gan mórán taistil
(... without a lot of travel)

an bóthar is annaimhe a shiúltar
(... more/most seldom walked)

an bóthar atá siúlta ag beagan daoine
(... which has been walked by few people)

There are various other words which could be used for "road", such as bealach ("way") or ród (an Irish dialectical form of "road", also used in Scottish Gaelic).

As "author" of some of those, the only one I'd suggest now is An bóthar is lú a shiúltar. There was another version given before - An bóthar is lú taisteal, which is the one I prefer myself.

I'd definitely wait for Bríd's (or anyone else's) take on it though.

Bear in mind that the phrase won't be so instantly recognisable in translation.
