Cathain a bhaintear úsaid as 'Ab'?

céard é an dífríocht idir 'ba fear mór é'
agus 'fear mór ab é' ?
an bhfuil aon téarmaí eile atá nasctha leis an saghas grammadach seo?

go raibh maith agaibh

Níl aon difríocht idir an dá. Deirtear "ba" roim chonsan agus "ab" roim ghuta.

I think the difference is simply word order as in English: ''he was a big man or 'a big man he was' and I think maybe you should have 'b'fhear mór é' as the first option and 'fear mór ab ea é' as the second option. Wait for much, much more learned opinion than me!

"Ab" and "ba" both are relatives forms ("ba" is also the "normal" form).
if you use "ab" in "fear mór ab ea é", it's because "ea" begins with a vowel.
As Mick said, it's the next sound that makes you use the relatives ab or ba.

An bhean ab áille
An bhean ba deise

But when you don't use relatives, you use b' or ba depending on the next sound:
B'álainn an bhean í
Ba deas an bhean í

In Donegal you also use ba dh' before pronouns that begin with a vowel (ba dh'é, ba dh'í, ba dh'iad, ba dh'ea).

How to spot an Irish person: when 'deadly' is a good thing! 8-)

sorry i've just one more question,

what does the following sentence mean?

dúirt sé leo freisin go mbeadh orthu éide oibre a chaitheamh chomh maith ina ostán féin le tuarastal ard - fiche euro in aghaidh na h-uaire

how does it just go from talking about work clothes to their salary? does chomh maith have some different meaning in the context of that sentence?
thanks

He also said to them that they would have to wear work clothes also (chomh maith means also/as well) in his own hotel which pays well - €20 an hour. I may be missing something as that sounds a little odd. I think that basically working in a hotel which pays well requires you to wear special work clothes.
