Hi there,

I'm currently trying to work out pronunciation/phonetic differences between Irish and Scottish gaelic; for Scottish I can't quite figure out if "dh" is treated differently than in Irish, or the same. Can anyone please explain?

at the beginning of words, dh is pronounced the same way in Irish and Sc. Gaelic (ie. a gargling sound, [ɣ] (see http://loic.cheveau.free.fr/irish/irish ... _gh_dh.mp3 )
At the end of words, in Scottish, broad dh has the same sound as initial broad dh in Irish (and Scottish).
In Irish, final dh isn't pronounced like that (-adh is either an "uh"-sound or an "oo"-sound, sometimes an -ukh-sound in certain cases and certain places).

normally they are pronounced like v, but between vowels they are often mute.
For Scottish Gaelic pronunciation, you should get a copy of this excellent book: http://www.akerbeltz.eu/books.html

Something else I've noticed is that it seems that "ai" has more of an "ee" sound...Does this have truth to it?

It depends on the word, on what is before and after, and if it's in a stressed syllable or not. Ai can be pronounced ah, ih or eh...

Sounds just slightly less complicated than English where an 'f' sound can be spelled 'f' or 'ff' or 'ph' or 'gh'..... :pages:

Irish spelling and pronunciation are less irregular than the English ones... English has one of the most irregular spellings :)
In Irish, once you've learnt the rules, you can pronounce more or less every words -- of course there are exceptions, but fewer than in English :)

Aye, Irish is easy compared to English ... but Japanese is the worst.
