And one of Stingy Jack's names in Irish was Séadna.
And if I'm right Séadna means 'traveller' ?
Jack o' lantern was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuus. ( Latin ignis, fire + Latin fatuus, foolish.)
A phosphorescent light that hovers or flits over swampy ground at night, possibly caused by spontaneous combustion of gases emitted by rotting organic matter. Also called friar's lantern, jack-o'-lantern, will-o'-the-wisp, no wonder there are so many legends of ghosts and fairies in Ireland. One or two horns of homebrew mead and a walk home through the bog could be a frightening experience indeed.
I found an absolutely horrid very early 'jack o lantern' image that I'd love to post. I'l have a look and see if it's possible.
So any takers to translate 'jack o lantern.'
