Ceist eile agam oraibh!

When you're shortening 'agus' to 'is or 's, is it grammatically incorrect without the apostrophe? And is it acceptable to use the shortened forms in the written language or is more for filíocht, amhráin agus an teanga labhartha?

Go raibh míle maith agaibh!

They are all fine, grammatically speaking. For really strict, formal writing, I can't say for sure, but generally speaking they are all acceptable forms for writing.

Agus and is are officially accepted.

In many songs, poems, etc., you'll see the apostrophe used as 'S at the beginning of a sentence and 's in the middle.

Putting an apostrophe in front of the i is redundant, as it is the i that is being omitted.

So, agus, is, 's (Agus, Is, and 'S) are all fine, but 'is or 'Is is weird.

I agree.

If it helps, "Is" is an accepted contraction of "agus" (and, unlike contractions in English, contractions in Irish DON'T require apostrophes to indicate the missing letter). So both "agus" and "is" are perfectly fine as-is.

The apostrophe is required before "'s" because it's a more radical shortening than the standard contraction.

it's not really a contraction, it's not the same word. Both mean "end" but in Irish they aren't always used in the same contexts.

"end" => "and" :?:

Interesting. I always thought of is as a short form of agus myself. What are some of the differences between their usage, Lughaidh?

Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir! I used to always put an apostrophe before is.

Really?! :O What are the differences between them so, apart from is being more common in poetry and songs?

:darklaugh: :darklaugh: :darklaugh: I should read my messages again before sending them :mrgreen:

The difference between "agus" and "is", according to what I was taught at the university, is that you rather use "is" to link 2 things that are usually linked (in set phrases) : Romeo is Juliet, Diarmaid is Gráinne... while you use "agus" in all other cases.
