Want to have some fun? Go to Google trash...er...translate.

Choose "English to Irish."

Type "I have a toothache" into the English field.

Once you're done laughing at that one, try typing "I have a backache" into the English field.

Oy!

Now, would that be 'oh my back!' or 'oh my tooth!'

Apparently, if you're not careful with your article in English, it will come out to "Oh, my runny nose!" :darklaugh:

We've been struggling with Google "Translate" since they first started offering Irish...their translations are pathetically bad, and they refuse to post any kind of disclaimer.

In this case:

If you enter "I have a toothache," what you get is "There is a pain in my back" (tá pian i mo dhroim)

If you enter "I have a backache," you get an EXTREMELY ungrammatical rendition of "I AM a backache," with "backache" left in English (tá mé backache). For those who are beginners, aside from the fact that "backache" is in English, this construction just doesn't work, even if you really WANT to say "I am a backache."

If you enter "I have backache" (without the "a"), you get a reasonably good translation of "I have a cold" (tá slaghdán orm).

Google is usually bad, but this is one of the worst I've seen from them in a while!

So I guess I'm confused because I got:

i bhfuil toothache OR i bhfuil pian fiacail
(for "I have a toothache" / "I have a tooth ache")
and

i bhfuil tinneas droma
(for "I have a backache")

respectively

None of those is correct either.

I have a toothache: Tá tinneas fiacaile orm.

I have a backache: Tá tinneas droma orm or Tá pian i mo dhroim orm

If you type simply I have a toothache, what you get is Tá pian i mo dhroim orm.
