Má tá tú ag caint faoi rud éigin in particular - (don't know how to say that either!), conas a deirtear 'how are you getting on?' meaning - how are you getting on with that particular thing?' Tá 'conas ar éirigh leat?' (How did you get on?) ar eolas agam ach nílim cinnte faoin aimsir láithreach.
This is not a 'how are you in general' question.

Hi Saoirse,

Agus tú ag caint fá rud inteacht (éigin) ar leith, thig leat 'cad é mar atá ag éirí leat?' a rá.

Slán,

An Braonach

A Bhraonch - an ionann "cad é mar.." agus "goidé mar ..." mar a deirtear i gCúige Uladh ?

Is ea.

Caidé mar = goidé mar -- sa chaighdeán scríobhtar "cad é mar" (ach tá an "d" caol).

This is another of those questions that will vary according to dialect because the preferred method of saying "how" in each dialect is slightly different:

Cé' chaoi a bhfuil ... ? "How ... ?" (GC)
Goidé mar atá ... ? "How ... ?" (GU)
Conas atá ... ? "How ... ?" (GM, CO)

Cad é is the same a goidé in Ulster Irish. (crossed with Lughaidh).

I think Connemara speakers sometimes also use cé mar as well (but not cad é mar usually).

The usual spelling of cé' chaoi is cén chaoi but I've removed the n to better represent the pronunciation. However, dropping of the n between consonants is normal practice in native Connemara Irish.

This should give:

Cé' chaoi a bhfuil ag éirí leat ? "How are you getting on ?" (GC)
Goidé mar atá ag éirí leat ? "How are you getting on ?" (GU)
Conas atá ag éirí leat ? "How are you getting on ?" (GM, CO)

(Corrections welcome.)

And that's not to say there aren't other ways to say it. ;)

Just a note for beginners. Some of the discussions here are conducted in Irish. If you don't understand what is being asked or said, don't be afraid to ask for an explanation in English - or any other language.

Response time for other languages may vary but we do have lots of multilingual members here, as well as native speakers of quite a few languages. :D

A little off topic, but very interesting. I just googled: 'conas ar éirí leat' to verify that I had spelled my initial comment incorrectly! I was led back to this thread (fifth on the list of results) so we featured six hours after the thread being started here. How cool is that! 8-)
