Does anyone know how Dinneen spells the phrase "in ann" ("able") in his dictionary? Is it even there? I can't find it under "ann" or under "i (n-)". I'd sort of expect "i n-ann", but I can't find that anywhere. I can find "i ndán" ("fated"), and the two are pronounced the same in some dialects (but not all!), but there's a difference between being able to do something and being fated to do it.

Any ideas?

It's interesting what you said about pronunciation.
I'd pronounce "ann" meaning "there" as if there was a fada on it.
But I pronounce "in ann" differently.

I agree it's not the same being able to do something and being fated to do it.

Is aisteach an dóigh a bhfuaimneann tú "in ann", le "a" soiléir ach fada :)
Ba mhaith liom a fhios a bheith agam cá as don fhocal "ann" (in "in ann"). Cad chuighe nach bhfuaimníthear mar an dobhriathar "ann" é :)

B'fhéidir gur chóir "in ann" a scríobh "in an" ? Dá mbeadh 2 n ann, b'fhéidir go bhfuaimneochadh muitir Chonamara mar "ann" (án) é...?

Sea. Is cosúil nach bhfeileann an litriú caighdeánach fuaimiú Chonamara.
Is mór an seans go bhfuil an litriú sin feiliúnach do chainúint éicint.
