Hi all -
I'm looking for some help on pronouncing a greeting. I wanted to have a greeting in Gaeilge to greet a friend who is an Irish native. I received this line from a friend of his. Could someone please help me with a recording? He did provide phonetic spelling but I have trouble getting those to sound smooth.
"Fáilte arais, deas thú a fheicfeáil arís."
Any help would be much appreciated.
The spelling needs a little tidying up:
Fáilte ar ais, deas thú a fheiceáil arís.FAWiL-t y_erh_ASH DyASS hoo ECK-awl ih-RHEESH(ch)
/fɑ:L´t´_er´ æ:s´ d´æ:s hu: ek´a:l´_ə'r´i:s´t´/
.
.Fáilte ar ais, deas thú a fheiceáil arís.The slender r /r´/, which I have written as "rh" in the phonics, is lightly flapped like Scottish r but so light that it almost buzzes.
The end of Fáilte and the following ar run together to give something between TEAR/TARE and CHAIR. (It almost sounds like "FILE chair ASH".)
deas is somewhere between DASS and JASS.
You can drop the ch sound from the end of
arís. It's
aríst in Connemara and I can't break the habit.
