I have always associated 'tabhair' with 'do' and then Múinteoir Scooby brought in 'tabhair faoi' in the réamhfhocail thread. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1375&start=10

I thought this 'tabhair' with 'ó' was interesting. the rest of you probably knew all about it, but it was new to me; I thought it was a useful one so here I am!

Sounds a bit odd. A direct translation of the English, which is in itself dubious I think.

I'd say -
Tug [tabhair] do shuíochán go [do] ....

I'm not saying that "Tug/Tabhair uait é" (give it away) is wrong. Just not in this circumstance.


I don't think you can order people on public transport to be polite. Afterall the young lad has paid for his seat the old and the disabled have free transport

That's interesting. On New Jersey public transportation it's "Please vacate these seats to make room for the elderly, disabled or pregnant people." I've always thought that was a rather clever choice of words, a little spin to make it sound like less of a personal inconvenience (we'll ignore the fact that most of the people who ride the bus wouldn't know what "vacate" means absent any context!).
