Knowing a prefix can be very helpful when working out the meaning of new words. eg. príomh means main/principal etc.

príomhoide - principal teacher

príomhchathair = capital city

príomh-aistritheoir = chief translator (not sure who might like to claim that title on ILF!)

Anyone want to add another common prefix and ideally give a few examples of it?

In Tobar na Gaedhilge, in the Ulster Irish works (written by native speakers), there's only one word that has príomh- as a prefix: príomhbhailte (the main villages). Only one occurrence of it.

Connachta Irish (3 works in Tobar na G): no word.

Munster Irish (2 works): no word.

There are quite a lot, however, in Dinneen's dictionary (under the entry "príomh-").

I was about to start a thread on prefixes and then thought I should double-check in case we had one already. Apparently, it wasn't the most interesting idea a couple of years ago when I obviously had the same brain wave and so probably nothing has changed, but I decided to revive this one anyway! Maybe there will be a flurry of interesting prefixes added as part of new year's resolutions!

'so' means that something is easily done.

eg. so-athraithe = adjustable (easy to adjust)
eg. sobhriste = fragile (easy to break)

and 'do' means something is very difficult or impossible to do.

eg. do-athraithe = irreversible (cannot be changed)
eg. dodhéanta = impossible

Searching in Tobar na G. is sometimes tricky ;)

When you search for "príomh" you’ll find a lot of examples
Connachta: príomh-Chathair, príomh-pháirt, príomhdhifríocht, príomhoide, príomhchathracha, príomh-bhailte, príomh-bhaile, príomh-áit, príomh-cheann, príomh-ádhbhar, príomh-stiúrthóir.
Uladh: príomh-alt, príomh-ádhbhar, príomh-chuspóir, príomh-oide, príomh-thoighteoir, Príomh-Breitheamh, príomhrosa, etc.
Mumha: still no word
