the FB game site is Zynga and while it can screw things up like most game sites, it's just a game site. Haven't had problems from IGT but I am careful not to open anything I can't identify and especially the underlined words

That reminds me, last week my phone woke me. And a man with an Indian/Pakistani accent started telling me that I had downloaded a virus to my computer (and he had a way to fix it by me giving him my details). I said to him "I didn't come down in the last fuking shower!!" and just before I got a chance to hangup I heard him say "get lost". LOL I haven't heard that expression since I was a child.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

I have heard several people talk about exactly that scam in the last couple of months. They have a bit of personal information and they offer to sort out the computer difficulties. If someone gives them a code that they ask for, they can remotely access your computer and garnish all kinds of data that may be stored there, credit card details etc. Nasty consequences. :ninja:

Google has started asking for your mobile number lately as part of its "increased security". NFW, José.

Another scam to watch out for is any software offering to increase the performance on your computer or to run a "virus check". When I see sites with ads for those, I usually back out or close down the browser.

I don't think the sites that provide GoogleAds have much if any say in what ads appear. Better not to have GoogleAds in the first place. And that's what we have chosen to do here.

We don't ban people for going to the other place, but be aware that you are dealing with a site that doesn't care if you click on an ad that might lead to a scam. If you feel you must go there, we recommend you proceed with due caution.

Some of these scams also tell you to turn on your computer so they can fix the problem.

I haven't allowed that either. I have also prevented Google from releasing data for Adds.

I have seen this one before. It runs a check and tells you that your computer is under risk and then it prevents you from closing the page. I shut down y computer straight away, turned it on again and did a full scan. I can now usually read the warning signs associatd with it and close down the browser too.

I never open any of these so-called ads etc - but there's one thing that does worry me and it's this - IGF constitutes a whole archive of information - answers to questions and discussions and so on, that go back over all those years - I would hate it if suddenly the whole thing crashed and disappeared. Is there any way of safeguarding it as an archive?

We've worried about that too. I'm not sure there's much we can do, though, other than recreating what we can here.

Anything you can think of that is worth adding to this site - as you very regularly do yourself, Franc - should be done. If someone has found something useful themselves in the past, perhaps on another forum, the chances are that someone else would find it useful now so include it on ILF. We have a good core membership here and quite a number of casual visitors - everyone has something to contribute - questions lead to answers which leads to an archive. Sometimes, I think that some people feel badly about asking more questions; what they don't always realise is that it is those very questions that add life to the forum.
