Yeah, so I discovered. See my edit to my post above ((which I was busy typing when you posted).

Ah, fair enough. They certainly don't make it easy to find on the site.

So, this gazetteer seems to back up what I said about logainm.ie earlier, in that it ignores the article when alphabetising.

Quote:
63 Abhainn Dubh, An po LG 312134 Blackwater 623
(g. na hAbhann
Duibhe)
64 Abhainn Dubh, An abh ME 083314 Owenduff River 3147
(g. na hAbhann
Duibhe)

Are you saying that logainm.ie bucks the trend you're used to seeing?

I wonder is there an element of some anglophone monoglots not knowing what the article is, or whether it's appropriate to take it into account when making lists.

Right, so. I followed Errigal's working link to the logainm.ie placename orders. They're terrific, but as the places are alphabetized according to their Béarla spelling (with the Gaelige name in column 2), they don't inform how the names would be ordered if only the Irish names were used, does it? Unless I'm looking at the wrong info or missing something obvious here?

I think you are missing the gazetteer Errigal was trying to link to. See here.

It's alphabetised in accordance with the Irish place-name, and you'll see (as in the two examples I quoted above) that they specifically write an after the rest of the place-name where it would normally be the first element. For example, entry number 3725 "Spidéal, An", is of course, An Spidéal.

r. aratyr, you seem to have got off at the wrong station… Follow Ade’s link. And, as I said above, the section “Alphabetisation of Irish language names” (=place-names) on page 4 of the gazetteer shows how to do it. Spelling changes caused by the articles ‘An’ or ‘Na’ such as the prefixes ‘t’, ‘s’, ‘h’, and the lenition of the initial consonant in a feminine noun, are all maintained, but disregarded for alphabetisation purposes.

Ade, thanks for posting that link. How do you turn “see here” into a link (a computer Neanderthal asks)?

I followed your instructions to the second-last one, and when I clicked on "Gazetteer of Ireland" it took me to the pdf, displayed in my browser. I just copied the link (similar to what I imagine you did yourself), but the link ended in ".pdf" for me, which I notice yours doesn't. Maybe there's something in your browser settings which suppresses file-endings in web addresses?

Tá an bheirt agaibh chomh ceart sin - I definitely went astray there. Ade and Errigal, you're the best for getting me back on track. That pdf is just the ticket, makes place-name alphabetizing crystal clear and gives me models to follow.
Míle Buíochas
