I am in an Irish language choir in Belfast and looking to include a couple of European pieces to our mainly Irish repertoire. We

building up our repertoire and we perform at Irish language Masses, community halls and mixed community events,

One proposal is the EU anthem Ode to Joy which is available in Irish - it was broadcast nationally following the end of COVID.

I would like to propose the hymn from Finlandia by Sibelius for our repertoire - using the Lloyd Stone words in Irish translation

(not the Christian hymn versions) and there are suitable SATB choral arrangements available, but I have not been able to track down

the Lloyd Stone poem as Gaeilge.

I have done a translation myself, which could be reviewed and improved, but I wondered if this has already been done before, more

competently - Lloyd Stone's original was published in 1934.

Maybe you can think of something IRISH to add to your repertoire?

I wouldn't dare attempt a translation; trying to harmonize the meter and melody with the text would be beyond my capabilities.

I'd be surprised if it has been done before. It seems quite niche.

It might be a good idea to give us your translation, so we can say if there's anything to be improved about it. Translating verse is a much harder task than a simple translation because, as Labhrás mentioned, there are considerations like rhyme and meter to take into account. If you've already done that work and just want a few extra eyes to look over it, that would make life much easier for us.

You're clearly not acquainted with djwebb. Encouraging and supporting others' use of Irish for whatever their own purposes may be is not his forte. He has very particular views about who should be speaking/learning/using Irish, to what ends they should be doing so, and what even constitutes real Irish. If he's already determined that helping with your translation doesn't align with his own views, that kind of curt remark is about the best you'll get out of him. Except for the fact that he actually is quite knowledgeable about the language you'd think he was an old-school internet troll judging by the way he interacts with people online. You'll get absolutely nowhere engaging him. Unless you want your own thread to get derailed and descend into a needless argument, I wouldn't even waste your time typing a response like that to him. You're better off being the bigger person, ignoring him, and waiting for someone more helpful to offer a hand with your translation.

To that end, as I mentioned above, it'd be a good idea if you wanted to show us what you say you've already translated yourself.
