Hi there,

I have been wanting to get a tattoo for some time now of my maiden name (Carney) in Irish Gaelic to honor my late father. I traced his genealogy and tracked his ancestors to the village of Carney in Co. Sligo, Connaught in the early 1800's. There are signs in the village that state "The original name of the village is Fearann Ui Chearnaigh, Irish for 'territory of O'Cearnaigh'" so I guess my question is... how would you write the name Carney in Gaelic? I also thought about getting it tattooed in Ogham but that seems like it may be going too far back into history haha... as I've only traced my ancestry to the early 1800's.

If anyone could help me out I would be greatly appreciative! I don't know any Irish speakers!

Thanks so much,

Megan (Carney)

The village is Fearann Uí Chearnaigh (with an accent on í in Uí), Fearann Uí Ċearnaiġ in trad. script.

The surname is Ó Cearnaigh (Ó Cearnaiġ) for male persons.
For female persons, it is Ní Chearnaigh (Ní Ċearnaiġ), so Megan Ní Chearnaigh (Megan Ní Ċearnaiġ).
