Hi all!

I wondered if there were other learners here focusing on Connemara Irish who’d like to practice together?

I’ve only recently joined the forum: I stuck an intro in the newbies section, but would love to hear from / meet any other aspiring learners and L1s, L2s alike!

I’ve often found that my biggest obstacle is not having a circle around to use Irish in a daily sort of way.

It’s great to meet you all! :D

Welcome to the Forum.

If I'm not mistaken there are weekly "coffee mornings" in Carrigaline or Crosshaven where people meet to speak Irish. I don't live far from there myself, but I can't say I've ever attended. I suspect it's more likely to be a combination of Munster and school Irish, than reflective of the Irish spoken in Connemara, but perhaps it's worth looking into.

I wouldn't mind doing an online chat now and then. I need to speak more.

Sounds great! I don't think I quite have the required number of messages yet to send a PM! :) :D

Have you tried https://gaeilgechonamara.com/ ? It's a great site run by galaxyrocker, who is also a member of this forum. Lots of information there if you explore the site properly and links to good resources.

Me too. I am a "native speaker," in quotes because I haven't heard it spoken for years and only learned to write and starting writing it a little a couple years ago if that makes sense. That is Munster, but I love the dialects. I know the differences between them and can speak Connacht Irish almost decently maybe, maybe not the more intricate details but I know "bíonns dar a' feilméaracht agus ag ithe na bhfataí acub insa gcathair nú a' díonamh rud eicínt mar sin" the basic differences and the first-syllable emphasis. My dialect is the "seana-chainnt" though, many of my words dont exist anymore.

I don't think you need to put it in scare quotes, none of what follows implies you aren't a native speaker. You simply are a native speaker.

When you think of words and phrases that don't exist anymore, drop a line here and let us know them.

Thank you. I just wanted to clarify that what I write in Irish shouldn’t be taken for gospel. I caught myself writing “ní chím” once- which is just no good, lol. At least I caught it. As for old words, I’m sure you’d already know the majority of what I refer to. PUL had them. While I’d say “cruach,” a young Gaeltacht speaker would probably say “carn féir.” There are better examples which I will edit in if I think of in time. Dar cnísc, dar so súd, all the interjections besides “ó” dont think they say stuff like that either. Just those words that describe the details; names of plants and birds don't seem commonly known. The same difficulties recently discussed that Gaeltachters have understanding their grandparents they would have them understanding my Irish. My Grandma used the word fiannaidheacht to describe nonsensical or far fetched/drunken-ish stories like “the cow turned into a flame and flew into the sea.” As nonsensical as the stories about the Fianna and Cúchulain. That’s all. Gonadh é mo sgéal-sa go nuige sin.
